It marked only the ninth time in Verlander's career that he failed to complete three innings, and the second time this season alone. The 42-year-old is now winless through 16 starts this season — the longest single-season stretch without a victory by a Giants pitcher, surpassing Matt Cain's mark of 15 in 2017.

Bassitt (10-4) allowed 10 hits, struck out five and walked none in 6 1/3 innings as AL East-leading Toronto kicked off the second half by improving to 33-16 at home. Bassitt became the first major league pitcher in more than a decade to give up at least 10 hits and not allow a run. White Sox left-hander John Danks did it in a complete-game win at Houston on May 31, 2015. Brendon Little struck out both batters he faced, Yariel Rodríguez worked the eighth and Jeff Hoffman finished for the Blue Jays, who have won 14 of 18.

Coming out of the All-Star break, they are six games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West with a 52-45 record and are only a half-game behind the San Diego Padres, who currently hold the third and final wild card spot. The Giants are in a position to make a playoff push and should aggressively pursue some upgrades ahead of the trade deadline to improve their odds of qualifying. Bryce Eldridge, the top prospect in the Giants' organization, returned to Triple-A Sacramento's lineup on Friday after missing several weeks due to a moderate right hamstring strain. Eldridge, 20, sustained the injury on June 21 and did not begin a rehab assignment with the ACL (Arizona Complex League) Giants until July 14. In two games with the ACL Giants, Eldridge went 2-for-6 with a walk and an RBI.

Shohei Ohtani will make his next start on the mound on Monday as the Los Angeles Dodgers' two-way superstar progresses toward longer outings after elbow surgery. Ohtani also pitched three innings in his last start at San Francisco last Saturday. Roberts said Friday that Ohtani will have a multi-inning partner for at least a few more starts.

More than a decade ago, the Giants selected Matt Gage in the 10th round of the 2014 MLB draft out of Siena College. Gage advanced through the system but was released midway through the 2018 season while playing for Double-A Richmond, never playing for the big league team during his first stint with the organization. Former San Francisco Giants managing general partner Bill Neukom, a bow-tie loving, longtime Microsoft attorney who was at the helm when the team won its first World Series title in 2010, has died. The team announced Neukom's death Thursday. Neukom retired from his role following the 2011 season and after the Giants captured the 2010 World Series for their first of three every-other-year titles that included championships in 2012 and 2014. "Bill will always hold a special place in our hearts and in the history of this franchise," Giants CEO Larry Baer said in a statement.

To their credit, they don't smell quite as badly as they did in 2024, when they broke the MLB record for losses in a season (121). Hey, a silver lining is a silver lining. The Pale Hose have the second-worst record in the league, 9.5 games ahead of the dreadful Colorado Rockies, who show no signs of making a run. Thus, barring an epic losing streak, the Sox will not finish at the bottom of the bottom.

The San Francisco Giants' farm system was down in the dumps for a while, but has started to make some great progress over the past few weeks and the 2025 MLB draft. Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report recently released his latest farm system rankings, accounting for the 2025 MLB draft, and the Giants jumped way up from last place to No. 23. It is extra impressive that the farm has been able to move up, even still feeling the loss of James Tibbs III in the Rafael Devers trade.
