Melvin makes plea for SF Giants' 'fireman' to get All-Star Game nod
Set-up men do not usually get invited to pitch in MLB's All-Star Game, as staff aces, household names, and premier closers are traditionally the ones selected to fill out the American and National League rosters for the Midsummer Classic. Including his work in the Giants' 7-2 win over the Athletics at Sutter Health Park on Saturday, Rodriguez, dating back to May 1, has now allowed just one earned run in his last 24 1/3 innings.
Webb pitches into 7th inning as Giants beat Athletics 7-2
Willy Adames had three hits and four RBIs to back a strong start by Logan Webb and the San Francisco Giants beat the Athletics 7-2 on Saturday night. Webb (8-6) gave up two runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings to move to 4-0 in five career starts against the Athletics. Randy Rodríguez got the final out in the seventh and Tyler Rogers and Spencer Bivens each pitched a scoreless inning to close it out as the Giants won for the third time in four games.
Logan Webb hits impressive career milestone vs. Athletics
While the San Francisco Giants have disappointed since tying the Los Angeles Dodgers for the division lead with a mid-June surge, veteran ace Logan Webb is putting together another strong season. Webb entered Saturday's matchup against the Athletics with 897 strikeouts. In the bottom of the fourth inning, he caught Nick Kurtz looking with a 91 mph sinker for career strikeout No. 900, per the Giants official X account. Webb only needed 165 games to rack up 900 Ks.
Windber graduate Braxton Roxby fires scoreless inning in Triple-A debut
RENO, Nev. – Windber native and former Pitt-Johnstown hurler Braxton Roxby threw a scoreless inning during his Triple-A debut with the Sacramento River Cats during Friday's Pacific Coast League game against the Reno Aces. Sacramento, an affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, won 9-6. The Windber Area High School graduate struck out a batter during the eighth inning to earn a hold. Roxby threw ...
Giants activate 3B Matt Chapman (hand) from IL
The San Francisco Giants activated third baseman Matt Chapman from the 10-day injured list prior to Saturday night's contest against the host Athletics. Chapman is batting fourth while playing in his customary defensive spot at the hot corner. Chapman was sidelined with a right hand injury sustained in a game against the Atlanta Braves on June 8. He jammed the hand while diving back to first base in the bottom of the eighth inning and immediately displayed he was in pain. Chapman, 32, played in a rehab game for Triple-A Sacramento on Friday night in Reno, Nev., and went 0-for-3 with a walk. San Francisco was just 9-14 without Chapman and has lost eight of its past 11 entering Saturday's contest
Sputtering SF Giants activate Matt Chapman, and not a moment too soon
The Giants activated third baseman Matt Chapman off the injured list Saturday and, as expected, inserted him into the lineup right away as the cleanup hitter against the Athletics at Sutter Health Park. Chapman might not be a savior for the sputtering Giants, who entered Saturday one game out of the National League's third and final wild-card spot. “I can't say enough good things about (Chapman) and just how bad he wants to be out on that field with his teammates,” Giants general manager Zack Minasian said on KNBR earlier this week.
Dodgers pitchers Blake Snell, Blake Treinen progressing toward return
Pitchers Blake Snell and Blake Treinen are progressing toward a return for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Snell and Treinen each faced hitters Saturday, and Snell pitched two innings. Each could begin a rehab assignment after the All-Star break.
Giants Veteran Knows He Needs to Improve, Says Performance Is 'Embarrassing'
The San Francisco Giants started off their season on a hot streak, and while they have begun to cool down in recent weeks, they are still doing whatever it takes to stay in the race of the National League West. Unfortunately, with them falling to 47-42, they are now third behind the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres, and only three and a half games ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks. With the team in a rut, they are doing whatever they can to stay afloat, but after an 11-2 loss to the Athletics, things are beginning to seem a bit dire with the current core of players. One of their key offseason acquisitions who has not found his stride is Justin Verlander.
San Francisco Giants Expect to Activate Superstar from Injured List
The San Francisco Giants are hoping to get Matt Chapman back in the batting order for Saturday's game with the Athletics. During a pre-game session with media on Friday, manager Bob Melvin told reporters that the expectation is that Chapman will be active for Saturday's game in Sacramento. Chapman's comments were reported by NBC Sports Bay Area, among other outlets.

Ray throws second career complete game as SF Giants split series in Arizona
The Giants went into their series finale at Chase Field with a bullpen in need of a breather. Wednesday night's 6-5 win, 10-inning win required manager Bob Melvin use five relievers: Erik Miller, Spencer Bivens, Randy Rodríguez, Tyler Rogers and Camilo Doval. Doval, in particular, threw two innings for the first time in three years, blowing a save in the ninth before locking down a win in the 10th. Melvin would've been happy if Robbie Ray went seven innings.
