Robbie Ray struck out nine in seven innings and became the National League's first eight-game winner as the San Francisco Giants beat the San Diego Padres 3-2 on Thursday. Ray (8-1) allowed two runs and four hits with a walk. The 2021 AL Cy Young Award winner struck out four of the first five hitters he faced and retired 11 in a row after Manny Machado's homer run in the third. Randy Rodriguez retired three betters and Camilo Doval set down three for his eighth save.

The month of May was good to Robbie Ray. Ray matched his season-best strikeout total, passed Paul Skenes on the National League leaderboard and powered the Giants to a split in their four-game series with the Padres on Thursday. Manny Machado reached a major career milestone Thursday afternoon, earning a spot in the history books in the process. In the third inning of the San Diego Padres' showdown with the San Francisco Giants, the 32-year-old third baseman hit a 391-foot, two-run home run to left-center. The go-ahead bomb marked the 350th home run of Machado's career.

With one of the best records in the National League, adding some pieces to this roster seemed like something Buster Posey would do. Because of that, there's a chance San Francisco could actually sell off some pieces instead of adding. While it would likely take things to go extremely wrong for that to happen, if the Giants don't believe this group can win a World Series championship, then they would be better suited to not ship out assets and get something back in return for their upcoming free agents. If that's the decision they do make, then Jeff Passan of ESPN thinks breakout star Wilmer Flores could be their best trade chip.

The San Diego Padres will be without starting shortstop Xander Bogaerts for the series finale against the San Francisco Giants Thursday. “I've been having it a couple days now,” Bogaerts said to The San Diego Union-Tribune's Kevin Acee. Bogaerts added that he experienced discomfort when swinging a bat. Bogaerts is hitting .238 with three home runs, 21 runs batted in, and an OPS of .651 this season.

The 31-year-old Wade, who hit a career-high .260 last season and has contributed many timely hits during his four-plus seasons with the Giants, was batting .167 (24 for 144) in 50 games this year.

The month of May wasn't the greatest for the San Francisco Giants, who went 14-16 after a strong 19-12 start to the season. If there is any positive to take away from the team's overall performance, it is that the needs for the Giants to remain in the playoff picture are clear. At the very least, San Francisco can rest easy knowing that it already possesses the pitching depth to compete with any team in the league. There were several standout performers on the mound for the Giants over the last month, and one hitter who stepped his game up with his teammates failing to rise to the occasion.
